Reflexology is a focused pressure technique, usually directed at the feet or hands.
It is based on the premise that there are zones and reflexes on different parts of the body which correspond to and are relative to all parts, glands and organs of the
How does it work and what are the benefits?
"When the reflexes are stimulated, the body's natural electrical energy works along the nervous system to clear any blockages in the corresponding zones. A reflexology session seems to break up deposits (felt as a sandy or gritty area beneath the skin) which may interfere with the body's electrical energy in the nervous system. Manipulating specific reflexes removes stress, activating a parasympathetic response in the body to enable the blockages to be released by a physiological change in the body. With stress removed and circulation enhanced, the body is allowed to return to a state of balance also known as homeostasis." Foot Reflexology - Donald Bisson
The benefits of Reflexology is relaxation with the removal of stress, enhanced circulation, it assists the body to normalize the metabolisms naturally and it compliments all other healing modalities.
What is the length of a session?
A Reflexology session is always completed on both feet. The length of session for adults will be 60 minutes. For children whom have considerably smaller feet, their session will be 30 minutes.
The treatment is performed on bare feet, therefore the client will need to remove their socks/nylons and shoes and roll up their pant legs to just below the knees in order to avoid getting any massage oil on clothing as each session will start and end with a relaxing massage to the foot and just above the ankle to mid calf. The client will be lying on their back on a massage table on top of a blanket that provides heat or not depending on client's preference and will be covered with another blanket if client chooses for extra warmth. The Reflexologist will share with the client if the client wishes the areas being treated or stay quiet if client wishes to enjoy the soothing music and relax during session.
Pressure and Tenderness of the Reflexology Session:
The Reflexologist works within the client's pain tolerance with exerted pressure which ranges from 0-10-20 pounds of pressure. When tender reflexes are located, they should be worked with a degree of pressure to effect the desired result. The client should tell the reflexologist their threshold level of tender reflexes ranging from 1 (mild tenderness) to 5 (very tender). Reflexes are worked according to the body's requirements. Tenderness may be due to stress, surgery, injury and illness, medications taken by client, foot conditions and muscle tightness throughout body.
Clients are to practice foot cleanliness, provide a thorough and complete health history with consent given for the Reflexology treatment and accepts responsibility for the session. The Client advises the Reflexologist of their pain tolerance threshold, in order to never exceed the level of "uncomfortable yet tolerable" as exceeding this pain level is contradictory for the health benefit outcome of the session and will cause the client unnecessary discomfort during and possibly post session.
